My G5 (10.3.4) has developed this odd problem - countless reboots, permission fixes and reinstalling the 10.3.4 Combo Update didn't solve it. Other typical problem solving tricks (cache cleaner, new user account, etc) didn't help either.
Removable volumes, such as a CD/DVD, iPod, USB Flash disk, iDisk don't mount to the desktop, nor do they appear when I look at the computers /Volumes folder.
Its not the Finder preferences for mount/don't mount certain disks on the desktop; I've checked. Plus, if that were the issue, the devices would still show up in the /Volumes folder. No, this is something else.
Oddly, Disk Utility will identify them as mounted and allow me to eject them. I can't, however, actually drill down into them and get to any of the files.
I'm afraid I'm looking at an archive & restore reinstallation of Panther, but before I do, I was wondering if anyone has seen this issue?
Edit: Oh, forgot to mention - if I force quit and relaunch the Finder, the volumes will appear.

(if anyone cares...)
Something is very weird. Even an Archive and Restore didn't fix it. I'm thinking I may have to do a clean install. I don't have any haxies installed, but I wonder if there's a corrupted preference file someplace that was restored along with the rest of my home folder data when I did the archive/restore.
Very aggravating to say the least...
The format & clean install will have to wait, though. I've got a bunch of projects due and don't have time to take an afternoon and reinstall everything.

Hey Cadaver
I just started having the same probs.
I just bought a 9800 pro SE and installed its drivers without thinking. Then I found out that
1) The card is fecking loud
2) The drivers were out of date
So... thanks ATI, you stingy bastards, and I've reinstalled 10.3.4 (the update). Then this weirdness started happening.
I've just reinstalled it again. I'll post again if it worked

If Disk Utility thinks they're mounted, try typing mount in the Terminal and see where it says they're mounted.

OK I may have solved it.
After a full reinstall of the entire OS I still had the problem. Therefore it is in the homefolder.
I threw out some of the hidden ."somethinghere" files in my home folder after comparing them to a new user's.
I also cleaned out library/caches and my Preference folder of anything I thought could be causing this stupid bug.
I think it's now gone but we'll see in the next few days.

I (accidentally) reported the same problem here, a month after this thread:
http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=219565
It seems like a Rev B G5 issue to me, unfortunately, especially since we're only hearing about this problem with our new G5s. I did a lot of things to try to remedy the problem, including erasing and reinstalling the OS, and losing some important files in the process.

Just in case this thread is still of interest to anyone, the problem I describe in the first post was well documented on the Apple support forums by several users/readers.
Its a Finder bug in 10.3 - 10.3.4 that is only evident when a graphics card containing more than 128MB of VRAM is present (i.e., 256MB OEM Radeon 9800XT and retail Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition).
Simply having one of these two cards installed in the machine, due to a driver bug, will prevent images and volumes from mounting to the Finder (though still accessable thru the CLI or via Disk Utility).
This bug was really confusing several new G5 owners with 9800XT cards.
The driver has been fixed in 10.3.5 and disks/images will mount correctly to the Finder when a 256MB graphics card is present.

Yeah, I'm so happy the bug was fixed - I went through hell trying to cure it when I thought my G5 was the only one effected. But it remains beyond me what a graphics card has to do with volumes appearing in the Finder. At least it's fixed. . .

17" PB 1.5gz with all new software. 4g iPod with all new software.
My ipod has just recently started not showing on desktop or in itunes. It says "do not disconnect" on the ipod screen, and can be seen in disk utility. It mounts after restarting mac. When I actually disconnect firewire it scolds me, eventhough there is no way to unmount this invisible ipod.
I just joined .Mac and have worked with synching, and it seems to be after that that this has started? Any suggestions. 10.3.5 is the version of OSX running.
