hey people
my roommate got a mac, and he's got certain things that don't feel right to him. tonight he said he hates font smoothing, it doesn't look right to him.
is there any way to turn off smoothing completely?
- matt
p.s. it's funny, because i'm just the opposite -- i think without smoothing, text is barely readable.

Sure. Have him download TinkerTool. He can disable font smoothing for font sizes less than 144 points. That oughta take care of it.

But since many of the system fonts are designed under the impression that they will be smoothed, I don't think he'll like the result...

You don't need Tinker Tool for that. You can do that in General System Preferences.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I'm definitely a fan of the OS X font smoothing, and I'm in the boat of thinking text is pretty bad without it - but that is clearly to do with OS X as if you turn of smoothing in Excel, for instance, it looks awful compared to how it does on Excel in Windows.

Also, make sure the correct type of smoothing has been enabled. IIRC, OS X defaults to "Best for CRT" so if the Mac has an LCD then you could probably do with changing the settings for "Best for flat panel".

True enough, but you can only turn it off for text smaller than 12 points. Tinkertool lets you set the threshold as high as 144 points.
