Sounds like you (unintentionally) activated the sticky-keys 'display pressed keys on screen' feature. Go into the 'Universal Access' preference pane of your System Preferences and click on the 'Keyboard' tab for the options to turn it off.

Probably hit the shift key one too many times while accidentally enabling sticky-keys... while dancing the macarena.

Who knows, not sure I've ever seen someone quote themselves though.

Go to the Universal Access preference pane, and then the Keyboard tab. Make sure "Press the Shift key five times to turn Sticky Keys on or off" is unchecked.
