I have two machines that I'd like to connect with an ethernet cable - airport networking is too slow for large file transfers - but need to continue to use the airport as the internet connection but the two seem exclusive. However, I don't know - if anyone has a few kind words to steer me either in the right direction or away from bothering - thanks in advance.

what macs are you connecting? Some have autosensing ports negating the need for a crossover cable.

it's:
1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 with 10.3.4
to:
400 MHz PowerPC G4 with 10.2.8

I'm not sure what you mean by autosensing ports...
