hi
I was wondering if anybody might have any idea what could cause this
on two or three occasions while in OSX - the entire system has frozen - with what I can only describe as ms-dos like writing that covers the screen (and overlays the desktop)
they only words I remember were "kernel exception" etc
all I can do is press the imac restart button
this is the first time I have seen my imac do this - anyone have any idea what it is?

It's called a Kernel Panic. Typically this is caused by a hardware issue such as faulty RAM (have you installed any lately?) or other culprits like USB devices. If it isn't likely to be RAM, you can test if it is a USB device (such as a hub) by removing that device for a while. If you no longer get a panic then it is probably the device that is the problem.
Edit: Third party software can also be to blame - have you installed any new software recently? If so, try un-installing it to see if the panics stop.
You can help Apple eliminate these crashes by sending them the panic logs (post them at the MacOS X Feedback page at www.apple.com) - the text of the panics can be copied from the Console app in your Utilities folder (Open Console, click the logs button to show all available logs and then select /Library/Logs where you will find the "panic.log"

If you've installed APE lately, uninstall it.

In fact, if you could copy/paste the text of panic.log here, we may be able to get a better idea of what's going on.

Yes, it is. APEs do not execute in kernel space, and therefore cannot cause kernel panics directly.

I know, that's what I was trying to tell Horsepoo!!! who wanted to pass blame off to APE with no found reason...

Sigh. APE runs in user space, not in kernel space. User space things CAN'T cause kernel panics.
(Disclaimer: Unless Apple's got a bug in the kernel that allows user-space processes to cause kernel panics, which would be a very bad bug in very mature code. This is unlikely.)

Well, since it appears as "dos-text" its not a normal kernel panic.. It should be a nice multi-language warning appearing. In any case, if APE conflicts bad enough with the system it can very well make a kernel panic happen.
We all remember this don't we..

Depends on which version of OSX the original poster uses, multi-language panel is more recent.

Not if Apple's doing its job right. A kernel panic is when the kernel's memoryspace is put into an invalid state. This can only happen because of one of two things:

A bug in the Mach kernel.
A bug in a kernel extension.
APE does not load into the kernel or any kexts, therefore it cannot be the root cause for a kernel panic.
We all remember this don't we..
If I recall, that was a bug in the file system driver -- in the kernel.

Anyone who doesn't bother to report OSX version in query may very well be.

Look at the original poster's signature... it says he's using 10.1
So yes, he is... I can't believe this wasn't obvious...
