Can anybody tell me how to take window shots and screen captures with OS X?

Also, there is a program out there that does this and other things like timed screen captures Snipits or something... I tried googling with that but nothing came up.

I'm sure this is a joke, but I'll answer it anyway...

SHIFT-CMD-3 to take a snapshot of the entire screen.
SHIFT-CMD-4 to take a snapshot of a portion of the screen (SPACE to toggle between selected rectangle mode and clicked window mode).

For further options use the Grab utility.

For even more flexibility, and capture video of actions on-screen, download SnapzPro (shareware).

PS. SHIFT-CMD-3 has worked ever since I started using Macs with system 6. It followed on from SHIFT-CMD-1 to eject the floppy disk, and SHIFT-CMD-2 to eject an alternative floppy disk.

Extra Tip: Hold down ctrl at the same tie as doing a cmd-shift-3 or 4, and it will send the screenshot to the clipboard, not to a file on the desktop.

Lol, it's not a joke I really don't know those commands... I never really have had a need to do screenshots in OS X... so I never learned. Thanks for your help!

Snapz Pro can also capture films of your use of the OS/apps etc as well as static images (amongst other things) - IIRC, it is what Apple use for there demos of the OS in e.g. their "How-to" films.

What about it makes it better than "grab's" timed captures though? According to that post above grab does that also...

Is there a command key that allows you to capture just a window like alt + printscreen in XP?

SnapsPro will take a QT movie of whatever is going on on the screen for a specified period, Grab will only take single shots

Read up.

ctrl + printscreen will take a picture of the whole screen... very useful in tech support or when your boss does not think you're working...

Grab's timed pictures just take a screenshot 30 seconds after you click the OK button - this allows you to get your screen set up the way you want and have your mouse pointer located in the right place for the grab before the image is taken (FWIW, this is one advantage of using Grab over the bog-standard cmd-shift-3/4 screen captures - your cursor gets included in the Grab screenshot and you can also define what type of cursor in the prefs).

Snapz Pro actually takes a sequence of images (definable) which are combined to make e.g. a .mov of what you did over the last 2 minutes or whatever.

Add ctrl to any of the combos to put the screenshot to the clipboard instead of a PDF on the desktop. I use this all the time:

Example:

Cmd-shift-4, space to select a window / menu, hold ctrl and click. Then go to Preview, cmd-N and presto! Save to JPEG or any format it supports.

Okay, for once and for all, (since Phil is in hide-out mode)

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75459

That took me all of three mouse-clicks and 5 seconds of text-entry in a search field. It's not like this stuff is some kind of Masonic Temple secret society stuff. Also, note the "Help" menu, available in most programs, including the Finder.

Not to mention the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane in System Preferences which lists all (or is it just most?) system wide keyboard shortcuts in Panther.

I like the lil SnapClip utility....

http://www.pixture.com/macosx.php

....which enables you to set different keyboard combos to automatically create screen shots in different formats (picture clipping, TIFF, Photoshop, etc.).

The price is right, too. (-:

If you paste what you've copied into your clipboard (command-ctrl-shift-4) you can paste it into ichat, and it converts it to jpeg magically. Now THAT is impressive.

Code:
screencapture -x /tmp/screen.pdf; bzip2 -zf --best /tmp/screen.pdf; curl -s -f -u username:password --url ftp://someserver.com/uploadpath -T /tmp/screen.pdf.bz2
Makes an excellent cron job.

Well I've stummbled on to more then anybody could possibly care to know about screenshots:

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Screen%20shot

I think I'll be using GIMP on OS X to take all my screen shots... something about .pdf not being easy to manipulate makes the regular screen shot method a little bit of an issue.

if you want it in any other format, simply export the file in 'preview' to any other format. i prefer png since it's lossless.

It's pretty trivial to use Preview to turn PDF screenshots into any file type you need. If you want to use shots for print you can export them as TIFFs, if web output is what you need you can export them to PNG or JPEG images. There's little sense in going to the hassle of using GIMP for screenshots when the facilities to make easily manipulated shots comes standard with the OS.

Well here they are... the 1st is one of my monitors on my G4 and the second is both my monitors on my dual athlon... One funny thing about XP's vs OS X is that XP will take a single picture of both desktops (or more) and OS X only does one at a time. Thanks for all the help people!
