I bought a generic PMCIA card with two USB 2 ports, to use with a Lacie drive for video production.

I honestly thought there would be issues, but the guy at Micro Anvika (UK mac store) promised it would be compatible.

Of course it doesn't work, it mounts the drive, I can browse it fine, but trying to play video off it, let alone edit with FCP is impossible. It just locks up, and forces a hard restart.

Is it just this card, or is it an issue with cards in general, the USB 2.0 drivers in Panther, or something else? Anybody with experience here?

I use a SIIG two-port USB2.0 PCMCIA card in 10.3.4 without issues. Its actually really fast. I think I remember installing a .kext driver from SIIG for it back in 10.2 before updating to 10.3. Maybe try searching their website for a download to try.

Also, have you tried supplying power to the card's input to give the USB2.0 full power draw capability. Maybe the bus power is insufficient when pushed hard.

Thanks, the drive is powered so I think that should be fine - I think it is probably the fact it is a crappy generic card 'New Link' and if I get one made by somebody else, it will work. Might try a Belkin, if anybody has any good or bad experiences please say.

thanks again.

if i were you i would use a firewire card for video editing, it'll work a lot better.

as for NewLink cards, i would stay well away from them. i believe Lacie make a PCMCIA card themselves. maybe you should give them a try?
