Hi,
I'm using an iMac Rev A. 233 MHz with 96MB of RAM and Panther. I know panther sounds like overkill, but it actually runs far better than what I expected. I saved disk space by deleting a lot of the useless built-in applications (Like Sherlock etc.) simply because I never really use them. Web browsing in Safari is acceptable, and I use Safari to check email as well (Mail is too slow). (I have font smoothing and shadows turned off BTW)
Anyway, despite the fact the computer runs OK, there is still quite a bit of lag for the following tasks: opening applications, new windows, closing windows, and a slight delay in opening menus (ie it's not instantaneous). I'm not BTW willing to shell out any money for this machine, as it is simply not worth it. I am only maintaining it as a useful machine to play light 2D games and web browsing on.
I decided I thought the computer was running too slow. So, I decided to install XFree86. I logged onto the console and typed startx. To my dismay, it did not work (I found out somewhere on the web that the computer did not automatically go into the iokit mode and old keymapping files were missing). So I copied a USA.keymapping file from an old Jaguar installation disk into a new folder Keyboards in Library and started startx with the arguments -- -iokit. To my surprise it worked
I installed two window managers from apt-get, blackbox and windowmaker. For web browsing I installed Mozilla and for word processing I installed abiword. So far so good.
I am sort of comfortable with the XTerm and for use of file management (you only need to know a few commands, and to change machine settings such as networking which I rarely change, I can just go back to Aqua if I need to do that). However, I wish for a graphical interface. I downloaded Midnight Commander, however the UI was so aweful I might as well do it from the command line. Is there a GUI File Manager that isn't based on GNOME or KDE libraries (I don't feel like downloading and using GNOME or KDE).
My second problem is with Flash. Some sites which siblings of mine use such as Neopets, require Flash. However I have no idea where to find any flash plugins for Mozilla on Darwin. And if there are Flash plugins for Mozilla, how would one install them?

Cool. I think that's a pretty sweet setup. So you installed fink for apt-get?

Yes, I installed fink. However, I want a GUI File Manager so other members in my family do not have to be exposed to the command line. Are there any that compile on Mac that don't need any GNOME or KDE libraries (I wish to avoid those programs)?
Aswell, I need Flash support. How would one achieve that?
Thanks.

undotwa,
When you installed X, are we talking about Apple's X11? If so, that is a pleasent surprise since I was under the impression that X did not work from the command prompt.

XFREE86 (fink). I didn't install Apple's. Even then, I had to install some Jaguar keyboard mapping files and startx with the argument -- -iokit.
