Anyone willing to shed some light on this feature? Apple is very vague on their website with exactly how much it syncs and what it syncs beyond "Desktop Pictures & Screensavers Settings", "Dock Settings", and "Exposé Settings"?
This phrase in general is very vague:
"Tiger advances the state of the art by integrating intelligent, high performance sync services right into the operating system. In Tiger, the preferences and controls for what, when and which devices you want to sync appear inside your favorite applications, such as Safari, iCal and Address Book. Now you can tailor and set syncing preferences within the application that needs to be synchronized instead of in a separate place. Tiger syncing can be set to take place transparently in the background, so it’s easier than ever to keep multiple Macs, digital devices and your .Mac account synced and up to date."
A lot of buzz words in there but no substance. Does it just synchronize prefs files from your user Library folder or is there much more going on?
Wasn't this already included with .mac? Aren't I already able to do this:
"The new Tiger sync engine was designed with .Mac members in mind. In addition to device synchronization, if you have a .Mac account you can sync multiple Macs across the Internet. Your home Mac and your office Mac can share the same, most up-to-date phone numbers, addresses, calendar events and more. If your Mac or portable device ever gets lost or stolen, your valuable data remains safely in your .Mac account. Simply log in to view your information or restore your data to another Macintosh or portable by syncing.
Tiger’s .Mac sync lets you choose which Macs as well as the type of information you’d like to keep synchronized. Tiger syncs once a day, every hour or every few hours, depending on your selection, and automatically syncs the latest information from each of the computers on schedule. Use Tiger’s new Sync Manager to see an overview of all sync-related activity, including the types of data you’re syncing and the apps that share that information."
Only thing I find exciting would be this possiblity:
"System-wide availability of sync services means that developers can now easily incorporate syncing capabilities into their applications. Tiger’s sync engine is extendable, so developers can go beyond synchronizing calendars, bookmarks and contact lists."
It'd be nice if the Finder had some of those Sync Services. I have a few documents that I edit back and forth on my PowerMac and PowerBook. Would be great if I edited those documents they would sync back and forth between my computers, not just the preferences for those documents. Quicken Sync would be very useful for syncing Quicken Data files between two computers. So Any developer's willing to share?
