Does anybody know what is up with the new, upgraded Tiger kernel? Any ideas? Thanks.

Probably opitimizations for 64bit.
Personally, I'm still annoyed they don't compile dummynet in with IPFW, I don't really need it much anymore (I've found other alternatives by now), but it would be nice to have.

I think one of the biggest improvements will stem from finer grained locking in the kernel, which will improve the utilisation of multiple CPUs. The FreeBSD guys did exactly that in the 4.x -> 5.x update.
And hopefully, they'll inherit some other missing features from FreeBSD (like the previously mentioned dummynet).

Although it's not technically part of the "kernel", there have also apparently been significant improvements to the BSD subsystem. For instance, they mention that most of the tools will now support resource forks.
This is all a Good Thing, but what I'd really like to see is for the tools to support aliases (possibly treating them like softlinks). That would open up some great possibilities.

I've been thinking about that as well. Since the goal of these changes seems to be to integrate the UNIX tools with the HFS+ filesystem, I suppose it's possible that this could come to pass by the time Tiger is released.
