I love Apple. I really do. They have their ups and downs, just like everyone. The Developer's conference (today) was interesting. Only Apple can keep it interesting. 64 bit processing. WOW! Still. I wonder how many developers are going to engineer this. Always innovating. That's Apple. That's what I like about them. V.S. M$N. Apple is always there for us. Innovating and trying. Putting the effort forth. I'll wait for the next incarnation for my monster i B o o k G4 . I'll plug more RAM into it if I have to... just make it worth it for me to upgrade!

... that seemed a little incoherent. Why would 10.4 need more ram? None of the other upgrades have. I highly doubt most developers will make 64 bit versions of their apps, because in most cases it would be approximately 0% faster, and would be more work, and be a bigger file (due to have two binaries, a 32 bit one and a 64 bit one). At this point it's mostly for the scientific developers, and maybe a few of the high end 3d/video/etc... people that need more than 4GB of ram per process. I'm much more excited about spotlight than 64 bit apps.

Want Spotlight? Practice up with Quicksliver. I just don't think this one's suited for my hard earned $. That's all.

Have you "really" thought about it. Spotlight is but one feature of Tiger. I'm going to enjoy reading the lame excuses for why people don't want to upgrade. Stevie Wonder can see the vast potential in Tiger.

Face it..it's not worth even trying. You know you won't last long on Panther once Tiger is shipping. Developers will have preview available for damn near a year before the Golden Candidate. Tiger "bitten" apps will be out in force and they "will" be cool. iLife 5 will be Apple's Tiger showcase. Yup...keep thinking you're going to save that $129. Your heart already know's it's gone.

I keep hearing about LaunchBar and Quicksilver but I really doubt they do the same thing Spotlight does.

Do they really search through mail and Address Book contacts and add metadata capabilities to all files? If not, there's no comparison.

edit: alright...so Quicksilver is pretty neat. It does look through contact vcards...but it doesn't search through mail content and it certainly doesn't look through MP3, AAC, video metadata.

It's really neat though...

They are different, spotlight is going to rock.
It searches through everything.

I assume thats why Safari will have a private browsing mode.

Safari's private browsing mode has nothing to do with searching. It makes sure that you can surf the web on any Mac and not leave any record of your travels on that Mac. Perfect for using Macs other than your own.

I think what he meant was that without private browsing mode on, you may be searching with spotlight, adn it will bring up "OMG SUPAR PORNO.com" when it searches your bookmarks or recent webpages etc..
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Hehe...I can see it now though...either people forgetting to enable Private Browsing or the equally devastating forgetting to disable Private Browsing afterwards:

"Honey, have you been surfing porn sites AGAIN? Private browsing is still on."

"Uh...I was looking up a present for your birthday."

"My birthday's still 10 months away."

"Yeah...so?"

Not that I'm being a pedant or anything but I do believe its 'Final Candidate' and 'Golden Master'. Just so you know.

Quicksilver will become even better when Tiger is released. Remember spotlight is a technology for any app to use and i think Quicksilver's interface is much better than the new Spotlight (in the menu bar).

I've gotten to the point where when i'm on someone else's mac--i freak out when command-space doesnt do anything.

I've never really cared for Quicksilver's GUI...not especially great looking. I think I'm looking more forward to LaunchBar's 10.4 future; that is, if Spotlight doesn't do everything I'd like it to.

We all have to realize the SpotLight is a system wide technology that is going to be great for developers. Now if a developer wants to, they can add efficient metadata querying and managing of data.

SpotLight the ACTUAL app is, what I think, a powerful example of what can be done with SpotLight. It's also for those who want to search everything on their hard drive, not just what the developer focuses their app's "SpotLight" functionality on.

I suspect that there will be some developers out there who are going to even try and compete with the ACTUAL SpotLight app. Look at CocoaTech's PathFinder.

Just because Apple includes their own file explorer/browser on the OS doesn't mean that some developer can't come along and create something better or more feature packed.

And to those who are saying that Apple stole this technology from Launch Bar, I want you to consider some things...

- Many Mac OS X users have been wishing for a long time that Mac OS X needed an integrated Launch Bar feature. Even users that are on this forum.

- The developers of Launch bar and "Launch Bar like" apps should be excited because they are going to be able to make their programs so much better with less work thanks to Apple allowing developers to integrate SpotLight into their own programs.

Just my 'two cents.

Spotlight is cool. But I've honestly never for the life of me understood why people have to search for things all the time

BTW, I'm too lazy to look it up. Can spotlight search through pdf's?

EDIT: It can search PDF contents. Okay, that will be pretty useful to me

SpotLight is going to be a great feature for me because of three things:

1) I have lots of PDFs, text files, Word .docs, etc.

2) I sometimes get tired of finding the best possible way to organize (and name) these files so I can find what I am looking for efficiently.

3) I want to be able to keep my contacts in Address Book, my calenders in iCal, bookmarks in Safari, and e-mail in Mail. BUT...I don't want to have to go into each app to find all my data. I want one integrated place that can list all my data based on what I am searching for.

The actual app itself just makes finding lots of data that is all over the place on your hard drive and bringing it together in ONE central place.

Plus, I am sure developers will be able to think of cool ways to implement this with their apps.

I'm just saying that having one app to access all the different data on my system at one time is useful.

Of course, I can still go into my apps and use SpotLight's technology to find what I want.

It does on my Mac — that's the shortcut to switch languages in the keyboard menu.
