The developer preview was on a DVD, but nobody knows for sure yet if the final is going to be offered on 3 or 4 CDs.

I'd go for two versions, or both in one package like with iLife, except that they can't really leave out any parts of the OS for the CD version .

More than likely it will come on CDs, as before. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if Tiger were the last version of OS X to come on CDs.

my g4 dual 800 only has a cdrw drive...it runs 10.3.x very well and i am sure will run 10.4 just as well too. of course i now have a g5 dual 2.5 on order though so the lack of dvd is not an issue.

Even if you dont have a DVD-RW it would still work in a DVD-Rom. Which is standard is pretty much all newer mac models.
I would say mac owners without dvd-rom or -rw are in a minority.

I hope it comes on 400k floppies.

My Beige G3 will make use of the floppy drive for the first time.

The Dual 800 G4 can kiss my ass.

I bet you'd need to install a new floppy drive halfway through the install.

I thought Zip drives were the **** when it came out. It came with my Performa..but then I didn't know anybody else who had a Zip drive so it was basically useless.

Wasn't there a 1gb type of disk format? It was called like Ditto or something.

What the hell happened to iomega?

DVD drives are so ubiquitous these days, I fail to see why it'd be a big deal...

There's plenty of Tiger-capable Macs out there with either CD or CD-RW drives, it's only been in the past year that Combo drives became the low end disc drive in Macs. While it might be a big deal for you it might be a big deal for an office that bought some early model eMacs with only a CD drive or someone like my friend with a CD-RW instead of a DVD-RAM drive.

The retail OS will probably be released on CDs though it may be the last version of MacOS to be released like that. The Developer Preview was most likely released only on a DVD to make it more convenient to hand out at the WWDC. Four CDs is a lot more of a hassle to pass out and keep track of in a convention than a single DVD is. A single DVD can hold the OS, localizations, extra software, the Developer Kit, plus all the SDKs they released for a fraction of the price it would cost to put all of that on multiple CDs. More than six months before the OS is released and people are already jumping to conclusions about it. Sheesh.

Because many Mac users with older Macs don't have DVD drives. Apple also sells education machines with CD-ROM drives only (iBooks). I don't see why they wouldn't put Tiger on a few CDs, anyway. Even though it comes out a year from now, I don't think it would be best to go DVD-only just yet. Maybe the version after Tiger.

I'd like to see them ship both. Those that have older Macs or don't want to invest into a decent drive should be allowed the joy of inserting five CDs...

Of course new Macs should come with two discs only. A DVD that holds everything and a CD for the hardware test.

its just not going to happen as for tiger capable someone mentioned they aren't capable if they don't have a dvd rom as those would be the minimum system specs

Those are the specs for the preview, sure. Besides, if you download the disk image, you can install it from that—so you don't really need a DVD drive to try Tiger. Ahem.

I would imagine the DP release was only available on DVD to slow piracy a bit perhaps.

It doesn't really slow it at all, as you can still install straight form the DMG. And it's pretty much the same size if people downloaded multiple CDs. My guess is they just don't want to give out three times as many discs to developers so they can preview it.

Anyway, who knows really. Apple could surprise us, but I think it would be a bad move.

I would expect both, with Apple charging slightly more for the CD version.

System 7.5 came on CD and something like 40 floppies (I remember installing it on an SE at school... ugh...). The floppy version was obviously more expensive.

Listen up those in the back row "Tiger will come on multiple CDs just as Panther." End of story. Fear not anyone without a DVD drive.

Damn, what a lot of noise over such an obvious issue. Dev build are on DVDs and the final will be on CDs. Can you honestly see Apple releasing Tiger on DVDs? Yeah I know this is Apple here and every now and then they do something infuriating but not with this. If I remember correctly didn't Panther builds come as DVD size disk images the developers could download during the betas?

So for the last time, CD not DVD.

Enough already.

No, they were on CD. I can remember downloading from ADC, and burning CD after CD.

Personally I'm glad to see the move to DVD. Makes things easier on me, and I'll have less CD's around. I already have drawer full of Panther seeds.

Tiger will be on both media in the final distribution. If a DVD is required, then all developers will be required to have a DVD burner. How else could we download the betas and install them? CD disk images will be downloaded and burned to disk, just as it was last year.

I think Apple is assuming ADC members either have a DVD burner or have access to one.

And if you can afford an ADC account, you probably do.

You are mailed the new betas anyway. If you don't have a DVD burner you can wait for the mailing.

Ever since I remember the downloads for X have been in CD image format, even at the time when CD burners weren't standard on Macs.
