Firstly, I have posted a thread over at the iBook forum (link) , due to the fact the iBook in question is of the type prone to logicboard failures. Excuse the cross-posting please. I'm still unsure if the logicboard could be playing a part in this.

Anyway the gist of the matter is that the iBook is running fine on Mac OSX 10.1, and Mac OS 9, but get a weird screen freeze when trying to install Panther.

I've zapped the pram, reset the pmu and searched for relevant firmware updates, without avail.

iBook 600mhz, dual usb, all peripherals have been removed.

Any comments or tips greatly appreciated.

When does it freeze -- at the Apple logo, before installation, during it? Do you have any non-stock RAM in it? Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test CD?

Actually, this should determine if it's the logic board or not: if you hold the Option key down when starting up (with the CD in), does it still freeze? If so, your logic board is probably shot.

Before Installing

1. Backup valuable data

2. Boot from the Panther "Mac OS X Install CD 1" go to upper left of screen to "Installer" menu in order to open the "Disk Utility". Then, click on "First Aid" and repair the hard drive. Then Repair Permissions.

If you wanted to be super careful you could run Disk Warrior if you have it ..

Unplug all your peripherals except your mouse and keyboard before installing

Take a look at this ...

Also ....
After updating to Panther and after any update .. Repair permissions: Close all files and applications on the disk you want to repair. Go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and double click it. Then select your hard drive in the left panel and First Aid at the top. Then click on "Repair Permissions." It will take a few minutes.

Here is a document that goes into more detail about installs in general, and the options if you choose to customize ... very well written.

Good luck ... You will love Panther!

After the Apple logo, and a while after the "sunflower" has begun revolving.

Just tried that (without CD in), and managed to boot up, thanks

Ram re-installed, airport working ........ still the freeze at boot up has me suspicious that something is not quite kosher logicboard wise.

Thanks for the help.

From what I've seen so far, it seems very fast, apart from the 6 hours it's taken to try and install it that is.
