i was happily using my iBook, no problems. unplugged it, moved it to the other desk, where the cd burner is. plugged the burner in, Finder spazzes out. okay, relaunch Finder. Finder never fully relaunches, everything is frozen, but the mouse can move. hmm. powered down, ran DiskWarrior, it found bad things, fixed them. i've booted from my OS X install disks, ran Disk Utility, all is reported as being fine. now i can't get past the grey Apple logo at power up, and even that is weird: the Apple logo moves. it shifts about 5mm down, after about 1 second, which is where things stay. it just won't budge any further than that.

anyone got any ideas? i can probably just re-install, but i'd rather know why this is happening first. thanks.

Boot into verbose mode and see if the OS tells you something failed.

Or...boot off an emergency boot CD and check the /var/logs file system on your hard drive for any system messages.

okay, it's working fine now. weird. i just ran DiskWarrior and Disk Utility a few more times, then had fun trying to select the startup disk (involving some kernel panics), and then it just worked. so, clueless as to what the problem was, but it works now.
