Perhaps I should first list the hardware involved.
A Philips CDD5301 Combo drive (was a working pull from a iMac) no installed in my DA G4.
A Sony DRU-500UX External Firewire DVD-+RW/+-RW drive.
This is my first experience with burning DVDs so be patient.
My first try was to burn my disc image to a Memorex DVD-R disc with Toast 6, It burned fine (as far as I know) until a little over half-way where I got a media error, meaning one of many things, and I realize that you have to TELL Toast that your burning a DVD. Anyway, that disc is a coaster now.
Not one to give up I grab a Philips DVD+R disc (the only kind I have left) and start burning. To my relief, it burns fine and mounts on the desktop. So I take the disc out from the Sony drive and put it in the internal combo drive, but nothing happens, the Philips drive won't read the thing! OK then, I read up on DVD+R and discover that there are compatibility issues, but no problem, the Sony drive can read, I'll boot from that drive.
But its a no go, while the disc mounts and read fine in the finder but the machine will not recognize the disc on startup, from holding down the option key I can't select it, holding down the C key on startup gives me the folder question mark, looking for boot disc deal and then it reverts to my main install. Selecting the DVD in the system preferences as the boot disc won't do it either.
Anyone here have any experience with booting from DVD+Rs on an external drive? Or have any input on my situation?
Thanks.
