I have an external firewire drive mounted on my desktop for extended space, but when I move a file or folder from the internal drive it just copies the folder or file and doesn't move it to the external drive location. Do I have the drive or OS X setup wrong? I would like to be able to move the file or folder and move it from one drive to another without erasing it every-time.
thanks.

That is the normal Mac behavior -- when you drag an item within a disk, it moves; when you drag it between disks, it copies. Hold down the Command key when releasing the files to reverse the behavior (the mouse pointer will change to show you).

Option key, actually (or "alt" key, if you've come from the windows world).

No, the command key turns copy into move. I just tested it on both Jag and Panther.
Option turns move into copy.
