How can I select lets say dozen pictures and display them in preview but without having 12 preview panes come up- instead I want the pictures to come up in previews sidebar. Any ideas how to do this?

sorry but they still come up as separate preview panes. Is there some preference that I am missing?

just highlight them all, and hit command-O. (hold down the command key while pressing O)

this works...

You can also open one picture, then drag the other pictures and drop them on the opened picture.

Or highlight them in the Finder and double click one. It'll also open them in the same window with them in the drawer.
