With my ibook, I type a lot of papers and on occassion, my hand might brush against the track pad and I completely mess up my paper. I noticed that there's an option to turn off the pad when an external mouse is present, and one is...but the pad is still active. I have a Microsoft Intellimouse* and I'm using USB overdrive. Sometimes, also, the mouse pointer is jittery.

Is there anything that I can do?

What do you mean by this? You might want to go to System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Trackpad and make sure "Ignore accidental trackpad input" is checked. Also, what I do on my 12" PowerBook, is I uncheck the "Clicking" option for what the trackpad is used for, and do all my clicking with the button.
