Problems with imovie and analog video conversion

I am having problems with converting analog Hi8 via a Sony TR86 and using the passthrough feature of a borrowed ZR40. It seems that anytime there is a pause in the recording (ie. when the camera was stopped during the shooting of the original footage), iMovie crashes and looses that clip. This is happening in iMovie 3 on a PowerMac G4, old iBook as well as on a new (yeah!) PowerBook G4 with iMovie4. Has anyone else had this problem?
