When I upgraded to my G5, I copied my iBook's contents over with the new setup assistant. The only problem was that mounted volumes were not showing up on the desktop or in the sidebar. The only way I could get the drives to show themselves was by using Disk Utility's Verify button, and even then the drives would only show up sometimes. They would, however, show up when I logged into another user, which demonstrated that the volumes were mounting and that the problem was localized to my account.

Solution: The cache file com.apple.FCacheUserDomain located at ~/Library/Caches/ was corrupted. I trashed the file and volumes appear just fine now. Just thought it should be posted here in case anyone else runs into the problem.

Well, I thought I fixed it, but it turned out to be only a short term remedy. I also tried trashing System/Library/Extensions.kextcache and com.apple.kernelcaches in System as well (as suggested by MacAddict) to no avail. Worse, it does indeed happen to all my users. The Finder sidebar usually displays the volumes, but sometimes it doesn't. I'm really getting angry about this. Does anyone know where the Finder keeps track of the things mounted on the desktop?

Well, I think I may have fixed it now, although it's too early to tell. It still doesn't mount my iDisk on the desktop every time, but it seems to be mounting my CDs correctly after multiple mounts. I read a macosxhints comment from a person with the same problem, who tracked it down to Virex. I tossed it and it seems to have made the difference. McAfee is so incompetent it can't even make an uninstaller script work. I knew there was no real reason to have it, but I thought I may as well since I'm paying for .Mac.

Well, it still wasn't fixed. I'm really getting perturbed about this.

I have the same problem OSX 10.3.4 on a G5 2x2 Go.

The symptoms : when I try to mount a volume (from LAN or from CD/DVD or from .dmg) sometime the volume correctly appears on my desktop, and sometime not.

If it doesn't appear, I can access it from the "open/Volume/" command.
But in this way, I can only access aliases of the volumes, so, for exemple, I can not eject them.

I try to reinstall the OSX 10.3.4, but the problem lasts.

And I called some friends whom are Apple technitians, and they do not know anything about that.

Hope some one will help us.

I have somewhat of a similar problem the other day. I installed a second hard drive in my 1.25ghz G4. Everything was fine at first, but then it kept losing folders and files. I tried running Diskwarrior on it, and it couldn't touch it.

It couldn't unmount the drive or some such. Finally the drive just disappeared.

YES, we have the same problem! I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one. We are both referring to the new G5s I imagine. I've been in touch with a high level support person, and he hasn't been able to figure out what's going on either. I'll let him know someone else has experienced it.

You seem to be having a different problem, Zim - no data loss occurs over this particular issue.
