I'm trying to install a game on OS X (The Sims) that uses Classic (OS 9) to install and run. The installer opens and it gets to the window that asks you where to install the program. It will install, however, in the top right under the name of my hard drive it says "1.9 GB Available". This isn't right as I have over 50 GBs free on my system.
Now when I try to install something else else that uses Classic, that number is even lower and it won't let me install it, saying "You need an extra xxx megabytes on Hard Drive X to install Program X".
What do I need to do, as I have a number of programs I want to install, that run Classic, but it won't let me due to this space issue. I'm sure I have over 50 gigs free on my hard drive, finder says it.

No, I think I have only 1 partition with OS X on it. Would it be possible to make an OS 9 only partition or restart the computer in OS 9?

I don't suppose you have a lot of RAM? Over 1 or 2 G? If so, try pulling RAM. I seem to recall some classic installers not being able to deal with amounts of RAM over a certain size, that being either 1, 1.5, or 2GB.
If that does it, once you're done w/ the installls, shut down and pop the RAM back in.

Scoot: I have 1 gig. It could be that, but how do I pull it if I have a Powerbook?

do you have 1 GB in a single stick, or aas two 512MB modules? I'd guess you have a pair of 512's, so you would remove one. Step-by-step instructions are here: http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/ .

This is a bug in the installer for The Sims. It only sees the first 32GB of your drive as "available" space. There is an easy fix for this though.
Using Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility), or Disk Copy on Jaguar, create a disk image to install onto. Make it big enough to fit the install (1 GB or so should do).
Mount this disk image, and install onto that disk. Once the install is complete, you can drag the installed application off the disk image onto your hard disk, then delete the disk image.
