I was just thinking about this... does iCal work with Spotlight or the other way around?

I know it has built in search but it'd be nifty if I could search for stuff and have my iCal info pop up.

By the way, is it just me or would it be cool if you could tie files together via metadata? You know, say you have a bunch of presenations, graphics, movies, and e-mails all on one project but not all of them would have that name or something, but just have something to link those together.

Granted I spose you could use labels for that... but I'd rather not have a ton of multi colour labels all over the place...

That's exactly the kind of thing that Spotlight is supposed to do. It is extensible, so in theory, it could be used with any applications files (it already works with Mail), so it will almost certainly be included in all of Apple's bundled apps by the time Tiger ships.

Third party developers will be able to add metadata to their own file types for Spotlight to use.

Still, I can't imagine why people wouldn't already keep all the files for a specific project in the same directory. I guess everyone does things differently

Well, I have heard that SpotLight can index and search for data inside the "Comments" metadata tag of files.

So if you had a bunch of files that you would like to link together (such as under one project name), you could put your project's name in the "comments" tag.

I have been using the "comments" tag for such a long time to group related files inside the same folder. Currently in mac os x, you can only make the "comment" column appear in list view and sort by it. You just can't search system-wide for them.

Finally, SpotLight is going to make this possible. It is going to make finding my files so much easier.

Right on Apple's spotlight page.
