No don't use AppleTalk! You will probably want to use AFP (Apple File-sharing protocol, I think?), but you don't even need to know that.

Firstly, as the previous post mentioned, use the help centre it really does have some good stuff in it sometimes.

But the short answer is to go into the "Sharing" pane in "System Prefrences" and turn on "Personal File Sharing" (do this on both machines if you want them bot to be file servers).

Then on the other machine, use the "Go" menu's "Connect to Server" command and then enter the name of the server (or it's IP address). If they are both on the same subnet, then they should automatically configure using Rendezvous, and you can connect to them using the <servername>.local version of their name.

(Setting both machines to use DHCP might make this simpler, as they'll get auto-assigned IP addresses in the same subnet then).

one thing i don't want to do is disturb the internet settings...
will we still be able to go online or will we be switching back&forth from the network to the internet?

No, if you're already connecting to the internet, don't change those settings. What are the settings though? It will almost certainly work with the existing settings (unless you have something odd).
