Is there such a thing for the Mac?

I just need to catalogue a couple of thousand scientific articles by tittle, authors, date, journal, etc.

Of course it should be as simple as FileMaker Pro and free. Is there such a thing?

[I posted the original question in the software forum, but then I realized I'm looking for a pure CLI tool, so I decided to post a short version here as well. Please excuse the cross-posting. ]

You may want to take a look at SQLite.

It is a free db and it comes with a simple cli utility for querying the db and such. It is pretty easy to write a little Cocoa wrapper around the C api. For simple applications SQLite provides several advantages over something like MySQL or PostgreSQL because it doesn't require a separate db server to be running and it stores the db in a single file.

never? hardly. it's easier than ever, these days. there are far more MySQL tools available for the developer, complete with "Mac-like" GUI's, for those who shun the command line. just because one person finds it hard, doesn't mean everybody does.
