I'm studying abroad this semester at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and due to their firewall, I'm having lots of trouble getting programs to work. All the proxy settings (along with a user/pswd) had to be manually set for each and every program that needed to get outside the Monash network for anything, but I'm having issues with the following programs: Mail is unable to connect to my home university's IMAP mail server; iChat can't get past the proxy, but AOL Instant Messenger can; MSN Messenger can't, because it won't let me set a user/pswd for the proxy; Ecto won't work because it won't let me activate a proxy option at all; and I also can't FTP in to my website at all with any program that I have, including Transmit, Firefox, IE, Safari, nothing. The IT department here at Monash isn't terribly sympathetic to my troubles, because these are all technically "non-academic" programs, but I'd like to be able to post pictures to my website while I'm studying abroad this semester in Australia, and using a desktop mail client would be infinitely better than a webmail interface (mostly because of Address Book's integration with Apple Mail). So if anyone out there has any suggestions for me to try, I'd be infinitely grateful!

Thanks,
Jared

This is quite sad, because I miss my roomie, and I would very much like to see his photos. Though I'm quite happy he took my advice and posted on MacNN. He's a 'switcher' as of two months ago, so please be nice. Even extra nice, if you can do so.

Authoxy is excellent, but seems to be unstable for me. (the daemon is rock solid, but the PreferencePane interface seems to crash whenever I try to modify the settings) Another similar app I've had good luck with is "SquidMan" it is just a front-end to the opensource squid caching proxy server.

Thanks so much for suggesting Authoxy, it got iChat and MSN Messenger working for me. :-) Now I just have to try to get Mail and an FTP client working (I'll check with Monash IT about the FTP thing, and come up with a reasonable academic excuse for needing it). Does anyone know where or how I can set the proxy settings for Apple Mail? I've been looking and looking and haven't been able to find where the connection/proxy settings are. I found the outgoing mail server connection settings, but that's not what I need. I need to be able to set the proxy settings so that I can get out from behind this stupid Aussie uni firewall and check my email. Thanks much.

Jared

The link at the bottom of my last post won't work because I somehow inserted an extra period in there. It should read: www.seenoevil.org/~jared/blog/
