This is interesting...when I open the terminal, I see "You have mail." on a line above the standard prompt. Any idea what's causing this? I've got no new mail in Mail.app, no local mail server running (that I'm aware of), and my motd is blank... hmmh.

Why would you want to do that?

Yes, which is why I want to turn it off... How could I figure out what turned it on, anyway? I didn't but some app may have.

several ways.

a .forward in your home dir to /dev/null (just make the .forward file have the entry "/dev/null" (minus the quotes))

disable the cronjob (not recommened unless you know what your turning off)

Here's the only entry in my crontab:

* * * * * /bin/ps -auxwww | /usr/bin/grep -v '/bin/ps' | /usr/bin/grep '[d]istccd' >/dev/null 2>&1 || ( /usr/bin/distccd --daemon --port 3632 --nice 0 --user macgyvr64 && /usr/bin/distccd --daemon --port 7264 --nice 0 --user macgyvr64 ) >/dev/null 2>&1

have you read the mail? i would imagine reading it would shed some light on the matter.

[localhost:~] macgyvr64% mail [press enter]

that should give you something like:

Mail version 8.1 6/6/93. Type ? for help.
"/var/mail/macgyvr64": 1 message 1 new

>N 1 MAILER-DAEMON@localhost Thu Jul 15 20:19 17/520 "mail subject here"

to read it, press enter. to quit, type quit.

apologies, if you already knew how to do that, but you didn't pass that information on.

oh, who added the cron job, and what is /usr/bin/distccd all about? i can see it on my system, but i've never knowingly run into it.

I didn't already know that. I'm just now reading about cron. No clue how it got added -- I'm the only user on my machine, and I've got a fairly long password which I believe is secure (I change it every so often, anyway)..

I think distccd has to do with distributed code compilation in Xcode.

Instead of shutting down the service, you should shut down what sends you the mail. Those mails are sometimes essential in finding out what's wrong with your system.

It is related to XCode. You turn that on or off in the XCode IDE.
