Hi all,

Is there a command line tool that would present the information you get from the System Profiler? Amount of RAM, processor type and speed, disks and so on... I.e. the alternative to the /proc branch of a Linux filesystem. XML would be nice, although anything that can be written to STDOUT would be of use.

I need to incorporate the information in a shell script.

Many thanks in advance,
_nmk

Note that system_profiler is new in 10.3. Before that there was AppleSystemProfiler which was less good and required a connection to the windowserver.

There's 4 detail levels. If you want a complete hardware overview, but don't need a list of applications, use system_profiler -detailLevel -1. (-2=overview only, 0=standard report, 1=extended report.)

If you want to save the output to a text file, use "system_profiler -detailLevel -1 >report04.txt" (replace "report04" with whatever you want to call it) and it will be saved to your user folder.
