Ok, so i installed Gimp using fink, the only package I installed was the one named "gimp" (1.2.5-3) and whatever comes with it, and the program seems to work fine. The only exception is that the help files seem to be broken-the "internal" browser does not work and switcing in Gimp to Netscape (the only other option) doesn't help. When set on "internal" browser and trying to access help I get an error like "Could not find Gimp Help browser procedure. This was probably not compiled because you don't have GtkxmHTML installed." With Netscape set I get nothing. Does anyone know how to fix this?
On another related note, I also want to install KDE and I was going to install the bundle-kde package with fink, but it gets to the point where it is downloading the files and says something along the lines of "10.5 MB will be downloaded, after installation 54 GB will be used." I can't imagine 54 GB is true, and I remember reading something about this error (I can't find it now), but if anyone knows anything about it please let me know.
Thanks for any help. I've already browsed the various Gimp and fink sites looking for answers with no luck, so any advice or direction would be most appreciated.

Re: KDE's size
It is not that large. Same thing happened to me. Try it with one of the smaller KDE apps/convenience bundles.
I have no idea why it says so large... but I have KDE (the package you are talking about, even), Gnome, and lots of other things installed from Fink and my /sw directory is still under 3GB. Ignore what Fink says.

Thanks, I got KDE to work fine. Gimp is still giving me trouble though.

Why in the world would you install Gimp from fink? And why would you install anything older than 2.0?
Gimp.app is by far the best package for OS X, and it's actually up-to-date. Do yourself a favor and use this one.

Ignorance is not bliss. Thanks.
I installed Gimp 2.0 and got the help browser to work (not the internal one, I still get the same error with that. I set the help browser to Safari). Now however, I get this error:
No file exists at the address “/Users/jessethomas/file:/Applications/Gimp/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/share/gimp/2.0/help/en/index.html”.
I assume that I need to move the help files to the right location, or point the help browser to the right location. I couldn't find where to change the path to the help files in the preferences, and I'm not sure where the help files (or the help file index) are installed anyway. Any suggestions?
In case it's significant, I installed Gimp in /Applications/Gimp/
Thanks for any help.

My Gimp.app help works just fine, and the app itself is in /Applications/Multimedia, so the path shouldn't be a problem.
What exactly are your settings in the Help section of the prefs? I'm pretty sure mine are the default:
Help browser to use: Web browser
Web browser to use: open %s
This results in the file opening with no problems in my default browser, which is Firefox. If you clicked on the "..." button and chose Safari that way, then that won't work. They want you to input a command for use on the command line, and I don't think Safari supports that. Using "open" will open the help file with whatever the system default is for HTML files, which in your case would probably be Safari.
Also, the release notes for version 2.0.3-2 (out today) say that "help/web browser now works again," so that may very well be your problem.

Pushing the "..." button and selecting Safari is exactly what I did, so I changed it to "open %s" and everything seems to be working now
Thanks for the help.
