Hi,
I've got a systemService that I use a lot - but the key-chord that it uses conflicts with Safari (Command-|) - so every time I invoke it in Safari the location bar disappears.
I could change the key-chord, but I really like it - and Safari's the only app that clashes - changing it to almost any chord would clash with some app's menu or another service.
Can I over-ride the shortcut through the Keyboard & Mouse Prefpane?
I tried - but it doesn't seem to work
- I get this in the log when I launch Safari:
Code:
2004-07-23 10:16:32.257 Safari[3508] outlineView:numberOfChildren: safe node nil
The Menu Item is slightly indented in the menu - so I thought that it might have a space in front of it - but that didn't work either.

This is what that part of the prefpane is for isn't it?
Or have I got it totally wrong?

Never played around with the Keyboard & Mouse Prefpane, but you could do this quite easily with MenuMaster (shareware, $10)

If you wanted a free, but perhaps more work, perhaps one of these threads over at Mac OS X hints will offer some insight, especially in the comments.

Another fan of MenuMaster. It is still in its infancy (I think rev 1.1), but it is very easy to use, well designed, and a life saver if you're a keyboard shortcut addict. I've even put the Finder's "New Folder" back to Command-N. I've had a heyday with it in InDesign, Safari, Entourage, and DreamWeaver. Each keyboard shortcut change takes right around 2 seconds to create.

Not totally wrong, just that Apple's system a little bit silly in its implementation. Anyway, to get what you want;
1 - Quit Safari
2 - Open System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts
3 - Add a shortcut for Safari for the menu title "___Address Bar" (three spaces, not underscores, before the A), whatever keyboard shortcut you want
4 - Quit System Preferences
5 - Open Safari
And now it should work. It worked for me. Yippee.

Can you tell me how to change the Spelling keyboard shortcut to something like the F12 key or ' Command = '. I don't like the 'Command : '. I'd like it to work globally for all applications.
I've tried various times and ways but still can't get it to work.
Thanks,

Do you mean the "Spelling..." (Command-:) or the "Check Spelling" (Command-;) shortcut? Which one do you want to change?

1 - Quit all open applications
2 - Open System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts
3 - Add a shortcut for "All Applications" for the menu title "Spelling…" (Option-; to make that ellipsis, not just three presses of "."), press F12 to make it the keyboard shortcut (make sure you haven't got Exposé set to use that key first)
4 - Quit System Preferences
5 - Open Safari and any other app you want to try that uses OS X's system wide spell check service
That should do the trick. Just make sure to use a real life ellipsis and you'll be set. Also, since it's a system wide shortcut, it wouldn't do any harm to log out and then back in after applying it in System Preferences, just to make sure that it's applied to all the apps you open thereafter.

You're welcome. I used to use Keyboard Maestro and iKey to set up all manner of keyboard shortcuts. Panther's implementation is a bit limited, but since moving to 10.3 last October, I've not needed to use either of those applications at all.

Using Apple's own built-in Keyboard Viewer, easily accessed via KeyViewer. Hold down modifier keys and it shows you what characters you can type.

Hi, this has been driving me crazy all day. in the System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, Keyboard Shortcuts panel, how do you add a keytroke and tell it to go to a SUB-menu? going straight to a menu item is easy, but how do you tell it to got to a sub menu and even another sub menu? i am trying to come up with a key command for moving an email into a specific folder in tiger mail, but i can't figure it out. the only thing that has worked so far are 3rd party utilities, but i can't afford the $$ right now.
thanks!
