The default in finder is to sort the files and folders alphabetically. This mixes the files and folders together.

I know if I sort by kind, the folders are grouped together. But they're not necessarily at the top and when I restart Finder, it goes back to the default.

Is there any way to have the default to be folders at the top and files following?

No, I don't think so.

I've recently switched from Windows and this is one of the "little things" that I'm trying to get used to.

I do know that there is a Finder replacement file browser called Path Finder

That seperates your folders from your actual files. They call it "smart sorting" or something like that. They offer a free trial-version. If this is a feature you really would like to have, I would download Path Finder and give it a try.

1. Add a space before the name of each folder. For example, change "Myfolder" to " Myfolder", and then sort by name.

2. View by Icon instead of List. Arrange the icons by kind, and then manually rearrange the folders to be at the top.

I admit, those aren't great options.
