for me it would be a hotkey combo that no matter what would drop to a full screen shell. this would be hella useful, and i seem to remember it from my lunix using days (1998 or so).
note: I'm not talking about killing the windowserver, just sorta bypassing it temporarily... i hope this makes sense to someone i'm at work and trying not to listen to this stupid meeting about crap.

I am still sad because 'sudo shutdown now' hasn't worked for this since 10.1. EscapePod will blow up the login window right quick, but if there's any way to get from the GUI window straight to single-user mode, it's a well-kept secret.

On linux there are virtual consoles. As it stands the closest thing OSX has is Fast User Switching. You could see if that will work for you.

If you don't want to have your existing GUI session messed up, then why does it have to be full screen mode?
Why not just run a Terminal window, with the command "sudo -s"?
You could even make the window fill the screen and have large font size, if you really want.
