I noticed something strange this evening and am hoping someone might have an explanation for it. In addition to running Panther on my internal HD, I've also got it on an external FW HD. This evening I booted from the external drive, and noticed how slow the scrolling was using my mouse scroll wheel, especially in Safari. I went into the mouse pref pane, and there is NO scroll speed slider. However, when using Panther on the internal HD, the mouse pref pane does have a slider for adjusting the scroll speed.
I am using an older Logitech scroll mouse, but am not using any 3rd party mouse drivers on either instance of Panther. Can anyone explain why one instance has scrolling adjustability and the other does not?

The scroll speed slider will disappear from the keyboard & mouse control panel when a third-party mouse driver is installed. This behavior is completely by design.
My PowerBook, with no additional mouse drivers installed, displays the slider when paired with my BT500 bluetooth mouse. My G4 at work with USB Overdrive installed does not display the scroll speed slider (must control from w/in USB Overdrive).
If you've ever had a different mouse driver installed (Logitech, Microsoft, USB Overdrive, etc), make sure there are no traces left. If not and you're still missing the scroll wheel control slider, try clearing out the system caches with a utility like Panther Cache Cleaner or similar.

I don't recall ever having loaded a 3rd party driver, but I'll have to check. Thanks for the tips!
