My external firewire hard drive unexpected unmounted itself in the middle of a massive read operation (10 GB or so). Now the hard drive will not appear in the Finder when I plug it back in.

I have turned it off, unplugged it, even taken the hd out of the OWC case and put it in the computer to ensure the case wasn't at fault.

Apple's Disk Utility see the firewire disk, but the single partition is greyed out. Clicking the mount button amounts to nothing. I have verified and repaired the disk, but no errors were ever found.

Has anyone ever experienced this before (computer can see the partition, but will not mount it)? What should I do?

First thing I would do is use DiskWarrior to try to repair the external drive.

Yep, I've had the same problem exactly - very frustrating, I didn't have diskwarrior which would have help as I think it was the file system that got corrupted (I'd had a number of power outages and think that may have upset things...). Ended up reformating, but it is fine now.

Did your OWC drive come with the "SpeedTools Utilities" by chance? If so, have you tried using those to repair the disk?
