I guess this is kind of relevant to the OSX forum. Have already posted in Peripherals:
We're signed up with Tiscali Broadband (in the UK) and our USB ASDL modem has arrived this morning. After a spell on the helpline I've managed to get it to work with my Father's Windows ME laptop. I'm now trying to get it to work with OSX. I've downloaded the Sagem 800 driver installer, which has worked fine. However, it only ever gets as far as saying 'modem initialising', and doesn't actually connect.
I've put in all the settings I know except for one: on Windows it goes through the dial-up networking setup, and the number it 'dials' is 0,38 (yes, with the comma). There is nowhere to input this info in the network panel.
So basically it isn't working. Help.

Not really an option.

Accept the USB crap and buy a second, ethernet, modem and use the Ethernet modem. They can't stop you from doing that.

Yes, thank you, they can't, but this would involve me spending money, and the USB modem is allegedly Mac compatable. This is only for my (family) home net connection I'm only at home about 3-4 months a year, and next year I'll be leaving home, so I don't want to buy a modem which will probably be useless to me after 3-4 months of use.
Which is why I'm asking if anyone knows how to get this USB modem to work.

I'm confused- you're saying that on windows it dials out to connect through DSL?
This thread ought to help.

Yeah, I don't understand either, but the way you connect is for some reason through the 'dial-up networking' prefs. It makes a new dial-up networking connection with the 'phone number' being 0,38. Don;t know why. Thanks for the link. Had found it on Google too but to no avail... yet.

Yeah, I heard that USB DSL modems do use Windows Dial-up to connect. USB DSL modems have always sucked and will apparently continue to suck. Have you tried calling your ISP and requesting an ethernet modem to replace the USB modem?

I think my alcatel USB modem on my Mac also dialed out. So you'll probably have to set it up in the same way as on the PC.
Big Mac, almost no ISP in Europe provides an Ethernet modem.

That's odd.
The three ADSL ISPs I've dealt with in Germany ALL supply an Ethernet modem.
No USB crap in sight.

But how do I do that??
The driver sets it up so that the USB modem pretends to be an ethernet port [i.e. when setting up a new location you usually have the option of selecting internal modem or ethernet; now 'ADSL ethernet' or something similar is added as an option]. The USB modem doesn't appear in the modems list (in the modem tab), so how do I communicate with it? If I work with it as if it is an ethernet port, then there is of course nowhere to put a phone number in.
Even I can hardly understand what I've just written. This is incredibly annoying!

I don't understand why you would need a number with DSL. It's not like you're dialing up to anything at all. It's should automatically establish its connection to the phone company's switching office. I didn't see you mention anything about PPPoE, have you tried working with it? Well, you know the fact is, it seems like you can't do anything about it at all. Take a look at this page:
USB modems are usually recommended for 1 computer, and plug directly into, and are powered by your USB port.
You need to have:
USB port
USB compatiable computer (e.g. Win 98/ME/XP/2000 or Mac OS7/8)
If you have a Mac OS X we recommend you get an Ethernet modem.
I would just assert my right to an ethernet modem or look for another provider. It sounds like you don't have that many broadband options, though. No Cable access over there? No wonder we rebelled.

It could have changed, but when we took broadband a few years ago they didn't offer Ethernet modems over here and I had to buy one myself for like €150 (when I already had to pay €150 for the USB crap).

Yep I would also try to activate PPPoE. Go to system prefs, open networking, select correct device (the USB modem) and hit the Configure button on the bottom, afterwards it will switch to another screen where you can see a PPPoE tab.
