I recently received the .Mac retail box as a gift from a friend but I don't have any immediate use for it and want to keep it for a while to activate later. On the box there's a nice flashy little sticker saying "2004." Does that mean I only have until January of this year to activate it, or can I instead initiate my membership well into the next year?

Thanks.

Hmm, good question...I'm not entirely sure; however, I'd be surprised if you are given more than 1 year to activate the service. Why not just sign-up now for use later on?

Just wondering.

Because the membership only lasts a year past the point of inception and for a variety of personal reasons I'll have little use of the service for quite some time. It's no great loss if I have to activate it in the next couple months; I just wanted to ask.

I believe that it says 2004 because it contains the newest versions of Backup, Virex, etc. It shouldn't have anything to do with how long you have to activate it. I had a 2nd box for almost 8 months before activating it. You should be just fine.

I think you're right - some of the .Mac boxes have sat on the shelf for more than a year, so 2004 version probably just means that the software on the CD is new.

I think you will find there is no software in the box.

All you get is the activation code for .Mac, you can then download the software.
