Im 16, so you can immagine what i do on the internet, mostly by safari, so lets just leave it as that. Anyway, my parants know the basics of using the computer, and I would like to know a good routine that fully destroys all evidence of what i have ever done on the internet, including videos i have seen over safari, or videos i have downloaded and watched over quicktime and windows media player and deleted afterwards...thanks, just wana be safe

"Reset Safari" from the Safari menu should be enough.

to erase your history in Quicktime Player, go to File>Open Recent>Clear Menu.

Windows Media Player doesn't have such an option, so you must delete the file called "Windows Media Player Prefs" located in the user/Library/Preferences folder, then empty the trash.

to clear the gereral history, go to Apple Menu>Recent Items>Clear Menu.

My son and step-son both thought they knew how to erase their tracks, on both Windows and Mac. They are 17 and 16.

They were wrong and I followed their tracks. But I found out they weren't going to porn sites. I found they were going to warez and hacker sites, and using tools like mosucker and minimo, on XP, when using my IP address.

They thought they were the über 1337 hackers, but I hacked them on MY own computers without their knowledge.

Since I own all the computers, and pay for the internet service, I installed some logging software on MY computers.

Am I the only former teen that finds that stereotype a bit offensive? I know that I for one did not go visiting those types of sites when I was 16 (which would've been '99 or so) and I still don't today since I have more productive things to do with my time, but regardless, as the last poster already stated, parents are a lot craftier than their kids, so while you might pull the wool over their eyes (at least for awhile) technologically, chances are pretty good that you'll slip up somewhere and that they will get you. I don't think it's worth the risk, but meh, it's your life to spend.

I wouldn't call what he said a stereotype, since he's admitting to what he's doing

Whether or not he fits the stereotype he inadvertantly described is inconsequential. It's the fact that he assumes people would think of all sixteen year olds as surfing those kinds of sites that is important, and I found that idea to be a bit offensive. Only mildly so, mind you, but offensive nevertheless since I was sixteen just a few years ago. Really, it's that "so you can immagine [sic] what i [sic] do on the internet" part that gets me since it presumes that sixteen year olds naturally surf those kinds of sites.

Sorry...guess I'm in a pissy mood tonight or something. Didn't mean to get annoying, but still, that's how I feel.

Indeed - I would be a bit concerned about a 16 year old that wouldn't mind their parents seeing everything they do on the internet.

I would be a bit concerned with a 16 year old that didn't do those things on the internet. Do parents think that there kids won't have urges? It's part of life and my parents once told me, they would rather me do it on the internet then with some girls where more harm is done. Is there any difference if you see things at 16 then 20, or 30?

I would rather that they engage in safer activities as well, but I can tell you from firsthand experience that there are some teenagers who can make it through those years without feeling some sort of an addictive need to view porn or engage in otherwise promiscuous behavior. Anyway, we're off-topic...

How quickly the threads derail around here. Why does anyone care what he's doing on the internet. If you don't have an answer to his question, don't respond in a technical forum.

I was going to mention Safari 2.0's new feature, but Horespoo beat me to it after only 14 mostly-useless posts. Another thing to look out for is the global recent items section under the Apple menu. It doesn't drop items from the list even if they've been deleted.

This is where education must kick in. Of course you can let the Internet, videogames, TV and films educate your children (???). When I have a child, I will do my best to be myself who educate he/she/them.

So you and your wife are going to strip naked and "educate" your child? Ewww.

You're 16 now, that's old enough to take a little responsibility.

Repeat after me: "Yeah mom, that's my porn! I also do meth and have two kids. What are YOU gonna do about it?"

The inference isn't that all teenagers look at pr0n. The inference is that most do. If you disagree with this then you must have led an extremely sheltered life.

Just use the FileVault feature in Panther to encrypt your home directory, and turn on "screen lock" when your screensaver kicks in. Any cache files, etc will be encrypted along with the rest of your files.

When Tiger comes along, you'll have the new "Private Browsing" option
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Ummmm how about NO. You don't get respect until and only until you EARN it.

I HATE it when people demand respect, or say that they deserve it... it's not a right, it's a privilege. This is one of the main factors behind my disdain for the modern child, they demand, rather than earn most anything. Granted there ARE exceptions, I'm speaking of the majority of the cases I've observed while working and traveling around town.

I'm with George Carlin on this one, EARN it, don't DEMAND it.

Mac Guru...
