OK, new hard drive. Goes into a Firewire case. Plug into computer. Doesn't mount.

In Disk Utility, it's displayed but shows no volumes on the disk - so I try initialising it as HFS Journalled.

Disk Utility gets about 1/8 of the way through then freezes.

I force quit Disk Utility.

Disk Utility will now not open while the hard drive is plugged in. It hangs on Gathering Disk Information.

The UNIX commands fdisk and pdisk also hang if instructed to do anything to the drive.

Without buying a utilities package, is there anything within MacOS X that'll let me get this thing working?

PS: posted in this forum 'cos it relates to Disk Utility more than it does to the actual hardware...
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

After half an hour, Disk Utility finally launched. It again recognised the hard drive but showed it had no volumes... and again, when trying to create one, it froze at the same place.

Never mind, guys. It was a bad Firewire cable that came with the case. It works fine with the one that came with my ipod.

Sorry to post in a panic
