i'm not sure where to put this, but here goes.
when using dual display, can i somehow set it so that when i set VLC or DVD player or iTunes Visualizer to full screen, the other one doesn't go all black. i'd like to have say the itunes vis on one screen, while working on the other one. or maybe a fullscree movie while having other things going on in the other screen.
any ideas/solutions?? thx.

Quicktime player can do it - choose Present Movie instead of Full Screen, and it gives you the option to choose which screen to use.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Not sure if there is a solution, maybe some AppleScript but I'm not experienced enough with that.
QT and VLC don't make the other screen go black on my iBook (with spanning hack), but iTunes visulatisations and DVD Player do, so I'm guessing there is a way around it.

I think it might be up to the programmer of the app...

it would.
You can run them in a window... but you still get the window surround thing. If you're clever, you can resize it so that only the content shows on the monitor - the window-y bits are off the screen...

VLC will go full screen and not black out the other monitor. You can even do work with it staying in full screen mode unlike DVD player.

Apple DVD Player 4.0 (the Panther version) lets you do full-screen on one screen only. Just check the "Remain in full screen mode when DVD Player is inactive" checkbox and uncheck the "dim other displays while playing" checkbox in the Preferences, and then drag the playback window to the desired screen, and then enter full screen (double-click in the Viewer window).
