We've got an OS X machine here at work, and there is a folder of apps on the desktop that we normally use. I'm not sure why, but all of a sudden we are unable to launch some of those apps. However, we *are* able to launch the apps from the "recent items" option in the apple menu.
I ran disk utility and the permissions all seem to be fine. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

What are the apps that you cannot launch? Trash the prefs of those apps..HD/User/Library/Preferences.

Are you sure they are not just aliases ... with a little arrow on them .. they can go dead.
Applications should reside in the Application Folders ideally under HD. They might already be in there if you have aliases in the desktop folder and recent items is linking back to the applications folder. I'd say have a look in that application folder in HD
You also could do Find

Agreed, apps should be in the Apps folder. Although that doesn't explain your problem.
Also, why are you using AOL X and Netscape?
Why not use iChat and FireFox(or Mozilla)?

so actually the applications are all in the apps folder; the aliases are in the folder on the desktop.
i've tried creating new aliases, and i've tried launching from the apps folder but still nothing is working.
we use AOL X and Netscape 6 for testing purposes at my office.

That's really strange that they will launch through recent items and not from the apps folder. It doesn't make sense really ..
Have you done a search on those apps
Two things .. you could trash those apps and reinstall them .. or you could create another user and try to launch them from another account .. that would determine if it was a system problem or just something in that user account.
Also look here ..

Also what version of OSX are you running?

I just thought of something else. The bundle for the apps may be messed up. The recent apps might be pointing to the binary inside the bundle.
I would trash AOL and NS, reinstall them, restart, and try it again.
