hello everyone,
here is the issue, running Panther 10.3.5- the computer starts up fine, really fast, once the desktop appears, it hangs forever! about 1-2 minutes! harddrive is 80% empty, 1GB ram on a 12" powerbook (latest)
any suggestions? I do have a custom wallpaper, but my other G4 has never had this issue.
thanks for any suggestions!!!

Try running Activity Monitor (or the "top" command in Terminal) to see what process is taking up all the CPU.

Otherwise try repairing permissions. Something might have been borked during the update.

thanks! I will try that, but, does the activity monitor stay on while starting up? how can I find out what is happening at that time?
thanks!

Or try creating a new user account and see if it also takes ages to log in, could be that some prefs are corrupted on your current account. It shouldn't take that long!

My advise to you is to check your login preferences and uncheck all your startup items... and if that fixes it enable them one by one until you find the bastard who stole the love of my life away. It was 2000, year of our lord, when that man destroyed my soul.

I sincerely hope you catch this heretic.

GODSPEED!

How many fonts do you have installed...? I experienced precisely the same symptoms as you are when I decided to install the Adobe Font Folio -- all of it. Even if they're disabled, fonts cause slowdowns at startup (and, incidentally, at application launch time)... after removing the fonts I never used, startup became -- dare I say it? -- snappy.
