Apple's support page for 10.3.5 mentions one of the features of the update to be "improved font management." They may have improved some things, but at least one thing got worse.

With a couple of my legacy Adobe Type 1 fonts (I have noticed this with some of the weights of the Minion Expert family) I have the issue that they don't display in a Word document. In TextEdit, even if the text carries the font attribute "Minion Expert," it is displayed in Lucida Grande. In Font Book, however, all fonts display correctly.

All this is after I have reinstalled the font files (suitcases and outline files) in /Library/Fonts. I have also tried to run them from ~/Library/Fonts.

Any idea for fixes? I would really appreciate it, since Minion Expert is one of my mainstays.

I see on Apple's discussion forums that many people who use Type 1 fonts have this sort of problem. It really does seem to be an issue related to the 10.3.5 update.

It appears that Apple fixed this issue. The release notes for the Mac OS X 10.3.6 Update issued yesterday include the following statement:
Addresses an issue for Mac OS X 10.3.5 in which some glyph fonts, certain "Expert" or "dingbat" fonts, would no longer appear in some applications.
