I bought Panther last year and backed it up as a .dmg.
The disk is at work and I need to do a re-install. I just received Disk Warrior from the mail and it fixed my hardrive problems.
When I run the installer via my desktop — it just restarts. I figure it wants to start up via a CD...
Any way to get around this?

thanks

Yep.
Open the disk, go to:
System > Installation > Packages > OSInstall.mpkg
That's it, that's Panther. Install packages (printer drivers, what have you) from other discs/DMGs (Panther discs 2 or 3) as needed.
Hopefully this will dispel the myth that you can't install right off the CD/DMG without rebooting. Good luck, N'Yawk,

Am i supposed to do anything special?
I mounted the .dmg and navigated to the file and clicked on it. it opens up and then disappears....
I also tried dropping it onto the "Installer" in utilities...

Should open just fine. Are you trying to install on to a separate disk or your startup disk? If you're trying to install it on the disk you're already booted from, then that won't work. Need to boot from disc then.
Hmm, you launch OSInstall and it just closes? Are you launching it using the Installer off the DMG, or from your HD?
I dunno. That sounds odd.

i tried it on a partition as well as my external HD (firewire).
now something else happens —
"The installer package "OSInstall" cannot be opened. There was an unknown error with the package (999)"
i also tried copying the file so that it's seperated from that folder.

[/QUOTE]
I am just clicking on it and letting it open. i also dragged it onto the apps>utilities>installer
is there a special way of "launching" that file that I am neglecting to do?
thanks

Hi!
Which version of OS X are you running at the moment? I think the problem is that the package needs to be opened with the version of the installer that's on the Panther CD. If you are currently running an older or newer OS version than the one on the CD, the Installer might be incompatible. I don't think that it's possible at all to install Panther without booting from the CD.

Uh, if you can burn the mpkg why exactly can't you just burn the entire CD image?

i dont have a dvd burner (dmg alone is 2 Gigs)
the osinstall is only a few MBs (which doesn't sound right so i suppose it is grabbing other files from the CD)

Panther retail doesn't come on DVD's does it? Sounds like your attempting to install from an Apple Install DVD that came with a newer Macintosh... You have good luck with that...

Are you installing from Panther? If not, perhaps the OSInstall package won't load from an older version of the Installer app. And no, you can't just burn the OSInstall package on a disc and do it that way. It pulls data and other packages off the Panther DMG as it installs.
Looks like your only bet is to just burn the CD. Sorry for getting your hopes up. Unless you are on Panther and it's just not working—in which case, I am stumped.

Did you mean to say "Tiger" rather than "Panther"?

The OSInstall is an mpkg. It just points to various other .pkgs (BaseSystem, Essentials, BSD, etc)
And just burning those packages to a CD won't do you any good if you can't open them with your version of Installer, unless you also burn the stuff you can use to boot the CD.
