Tonight, all of a sudden, my computer has been acting up on me. I first noticed that applicaions were crashing very frequently, or going so slow that quitting took so long that I resorted to force quitting them. Then I began to notice that the internet is having just as bad problems: google is the only website that loads completely. Even now a few last items are still being loaded, and I doubt they will ever be no matter how long I might leave it. Some websites just don't even work at all, like apple's. Sofware update takes extremely long to check for updates, and then it times out trying to download anything there...
It just feels like my computer is melting down... I've restarted many times and I've repaired permissions. I don't know what is going wrong but it's driving me nuts! I feel like i'm using a 5 year old g3 with no ram, and dial-up... My machine is a powermac g4, 450 mhz and 1 gb ram.
Help!

Do you know anything you did just before it started acting up? Install anything? Use Software Update?
Also, try making a test user to see if it is something in your user folder... and if you have DiskWarrior or some other maintenance software, use it.

I didn't do anything special before all this started to happen... I had stopped playing a game about 20 minutes before, but I can't see how that could cause this (and I've played the game before with no side effects). Also, there is nothing in my activity monitor using huge amounts of cpu - and that's not really the issue; everything runs smoothly, things open fast enough, but applications crash all the time and the internet seems only half-functional.
I created a test user account, but I still have the same problem... The internet is as bad, nothing's quit yet but I've only been in here for a few minutes, and software update take like 5 minutes just to check for updates, and then it timed out trying to download the updates I selected...
It seems like this is some sort of disk problem, but I've done everything I know how to do, and I don't have disk warrior or anything.

Alright I've fixed it. I downloaded Norton Antivirus (my college provides it for free) and ran the virus scan which did find a few baddies and got rid of them, but it didn't solve my problem. The solution was actually rather simple, I just booted up into the OS X Install disk and ran disk utility from there and clicked "repair disk." The option wasn't available when I booted from the disk because I guess you can't repair a disk if it's in use.
Thanks for the help everyone!

More likely it found virus-like code... doubtful an actual virus
Glad things worked out!
