My brother just purchased a cable connection for his emac (most recent version, running 10.3) I'm going to help him set it up tomorrow, but I'm unsure if I need to set up anything special. I've set up my home network, but I'm running everything through an Airport base station. Are there any special things I need to do? Do I need to purchase a firewall for the emac? Or does Panther have one built in? Any other settings that would need to be addressed on a direct connection that aren't when running through a base station?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

It has one built-in.

Not that I can think of.

If the cable stuff is already setup (modem that is), all you have to do is plug the ethernet cable into the emac and it'll be online.

Your next step would be to go to system prefs -> sharing -> firewall -IF- you want that on. I don't even bother with this because to me it's more trouble than it's worth with stuff like AIM or games that like using ports.

If you're using an Airport Base Station (ABS) it will provide its own firewall service. It's really easy to setup cable Internet service. Just connect your incoming coaxial TV cable to your cable modem, using a standard $5 splitter and an extra coaxial cable (so that you can have cable TV and the cable modem through the same cable). Then connect an ethernet cable from the cable modem to the ABS's uplink port. After that, connect the eMac to the ABS by using either another ethernet cable or using the Airport card. Finally, launch the Airport Admin Utility and configure the ABS.
