Question ..... When i shut down my powerbook at night sometimes it says it needs to free up some space or something .... before it shuts down. What do I do to prevent this ? What is it? Thanks

How much free hard drive space do you have? Click on your hard drive and select File:Get Info. OSX needs to have a certain amount of free hard drive space available to function properly.

What is prompting this message to you? A system message? Can you grab a screenshot?

it says something along the lines of too much space being used in home folder. will optimize before shutdown ..... something like that.

I think this has something to do with FileVault, but I can't recall since I don't have FV running on my machine. Can you try turning that off for the time being and seeing if the problem persists? Does this happen on every shutdown?

I've seen that as well, back when I used FileVault for all of a week. It seemed like it was pretty standard. I didn't think it was anything out of the ordinary, just something related to shrinking the size of the .dmg file or some such, but I'm sure someone else out there can provide a much more meaningful description of what's going on from a technical perspective. Anyway, whenever I got it it didn't seem like anything to worry about, it just seemed like the normal activity for FileVault whenever you wanted to shut down.
