How does iChat AV handle asymmetrical connections?

I'm looking at getting mom on broadband, with the ability to videoconfrence to see her grandson being the main motivation. I have 768K DSL both ways, but every affordable offering I can find in her market (Chicago suburbs) seems to have 128K uploads.
Will iChat AV make the video downgrade to 128K quality in both directions, or will she be able to get a better image of us than I do of her, since I'll have 640K of outbound bandwidth (768k line - 128K inbound) to up the quality with?

no. It uses greedy algorithms both ways, so it will degrade only when necessary.

signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

I'm honestly not sure how iChat decides, but it handles asymmetric connections just fine. My parents have slower downstream service than I do, but faster upstream, and quality each way seems to remain just fine.
Perhaps it just syncs to the slowest each way...

I don't know the technical details, but I'm sure you won't have much of a problem when it comes to video conferencing using what broadband you have. I occasionally do audio+video conferencing with people in the US (either through Roadrunner, Verizon, or whatever), and the quality is superb. Our broadband here (Philippines) is far from what you have in the US, with top speeds at 768Kbps, and the norm being 256Kbps/384Kbps. Upload speeds are usually capped at 192Kbps, yet we're able to do simultaneous iChat AV sessions.

Shouldn't be a problem, but I got my parents (also in Chicago) on cable internet and it is great. Cable would most likely be faster than the ADSL service you describe.

Excellent. Thanks for the info, guys.
What cable provider are your folks on? Mine have Comcast... any input on their reliability? Mom won't be much of a troubleshooter if it acts up with any frequency.

From an ease of use standpoint, cable is the way to go. RARELY goes down. And when it does (~3 times in the 3+ years I've had it), it is very easy to get back on. Restating the cable modem would be worst case scenario. Not sure what provider they use, sorry.
