I should be grateful if anyone can help with respect to the following:

There are 3 computers in this story
1 - iMac - 700 Mhz, with Airport card
2 - AlPBook - 12". 1Ghz with airport extreme card
3 - Old machine (a Umax c500 - broadly equivalent to Performa 6400) running OS9.2

To attempt internet sharing, iMac and AlPBook are run from OSX 10.3.5 on an external Firewire drive - i.e. identical for both machines.

I wish to share the internet connection that my iMac receives via wireless card, over the ethernet port to Old machine. I can't!

Old machine can connect to AlPBook including sharing AlpBook's internet conection over the ethernet port.

Old machine cannot see a valid ethernet connection when the cable is connected to iMac. In fact, on the Network preference pane, iMac reports that ethernet is not connected.

If I switch off airport in AlpBook, start it up with 10.3.5 from its internal drive, then it can share the internet connection of iMac.

so, in summary the problem is that iMac to Old machine doesn't work, but iMac to AlPBook does work and AlPBook to Old machine does work.

Why might this be and can I fix it?

TIA

Are you using just a regular ethernet cable between the two machines? It could be that the iMac doesn't have an auto-sensing ethernet port whereas the AlBook does - if that's the case you need a crossover cable to go between the iMac and the old machine. Just a guess.
