My system is a G4 quick silver with os 10.2.8. I have a resume and cover letter i need to get out of OS 9 classic windows 98. I have recently installed word for the os 10 mac version so i'm wondering if this is any reason why this is happening.
Every time i try it to grab OS 9 classic i'm getting this:
Resource update error
An error was encountered while attempting to udate your system folder with Classic - specific resources

why cant you just open the files in word in osx??
you're missing a component of os9, but...try the above first..?

So which is it? Windows 98? Or Mac Classic?
It can't be both, unless you're using Windows 98 inside Virtal PC inside Classic Mac OS, in which case, that would be useful info for trouble-shooting.
Otherwise, can you drag and drop the file onto OS X version of Word? If you don't have that, drag and drop the file onto OS X's TextEdit application (or AppleWorks, or OpenOffice, or anything else that can read Word files).

okay...you may need to reinstall os9.
MEANWHILE...why not open the files in word in osx???
this won't fix the problem with classic, but you WILL be able to access your work.

Was it only with the advent of Panther that TextEdit could open up Word docs? I can't remember if it came in Jaguar or 10.3...

If by "in Windows 98" you mean Virtual PC, that doesn't work in Classic anyway; you'll have to boot in OS 9 if you want to use it.

Yes, it was Panther (my mistake). So he'll need to drag it onto Mac OS X version of Word, or some other OS X Word-compatible application.

Try repairing permissions - if they're messed up in such a way that you don't have write access to the OS 9 System Folder, that could be why it's not being able to put the Classic files in there.
