Hi all

To cut a long story short, I've been trying to reinstall OS X on my week-old PowerBook after it went very weird on me.

I first tried the archive and install option but it just hung after about ten minutes.

Now I can't even get it to install a fresh copy. It keeps hanging at the "Base System Part 2" part 2 bit - first it hung twice at 36%, then it got up to 45% before just quietly deciding to not do any more.

I've tried the repair disk and repair permissions a few times, as well as erasing the volume in disk utility. All I want is a fresh, clean installation and I promise never to go installing stuff and doing things I might not be entirely competent with ever, ever again.

Please don't berate me... this has been a horrible day for many reasons and I wouldn't be able to take it....

But please help if you can, I would be enormously grateful.

for a start, call apple! if it's a new powerbook, you have phone support.

my new powerbook got a kernel panic 85% thru optimizing the 10.3.5 download, and apple was very helpful.

use tech support!
worse case scenario, they'll send a box to ship it for repair...

good luck!

Are you sure that your hard drive isn't hosed? That's what it sounds like to me.

Perhaps you could beg, borrow, or steal an external firewire drive, and try installing OS X on that. If it works and everything boots up fine, then do a quick backup of your hard drive. (I recommend Carbon Copy Cloner, as most people here would...) Then you could try running Disk Utility on it to see if it really is hosed...
