Can anyone enlighten me as to why after I change my password the old password still works. I am the sole user of my Mac. Therefore, I work as admin all the time. I change my password regularly. What is puzzling me is this: I change my password in My Account and in Accounts. I then check to see if the old password works to log me in, for password protected apps, etc It does. The old password still works. so then I can login with both my old password and my new password. Can some one let me know how I can remedy this issue without having to do a reinstall of the system ? Thank you in advance for any and all guidance given.
Peace,

That's not something I've seen before. However, I find it interesting that you have to change it in both "My Account" and "Accounts". You should only have to change the password in one place; the other one should automatically reflect any changes you've made.

My guess is that for some reason, the password isn't actually being changed. You say that the old password still works. Are you sure that the new one works as well? I have one other question: how long are the two passwords? I won't ask what the passwords actually are, but how long are they?

Thanks for your response to my admin password changing dilemma. I do not have to change my pasword in both the "Accounts" and "My Account" sections of the system preferences pane. I tried that to see if it would some how solve the issue. it didn't. The passwords I am using are 9 characters, letters and #'s mixed. Yeah, I have been unable to resolve the password issue. If I attempt to change my admin password (I am the sole user of this particular Mac so I always work as Admin) it changes and works with everything but the old password does not die. It still works with every application & with loginning in. It is of concern to me for security reasons. Any and all guidance/knowledge shared is greatly appreaciated. Thanks.

Both passwords are working? This is extremely strange. Some more questions:

1) Can you log in using both passwords?
2) Can you install the same piece of software using both passwords? (you'll have to install it twice to verify this, but that won't harm anything).
3) Have you ever enabled root on this machine?
4) If you've enabled root, then is the old password the same one that you used for root?

I know, Iknow dog. It is crazy. Let me first answer your questions.
1) Can you log in using both passwords?
Yes. They both work to log in. However, they don't both work on certain apps that require admin password yet they do work on other apps that require admin password.

2) Can you install the same piece of software using both passwords? (you'll have to install it twice to verify this, but that won't harm anything).
I haven't tried that yet but I can tell you that some software that requires an admin password take both passwords and some do not.

3) Have you ever enabled root on this machine?
No, I have never enabled root on my iBook. Working as admin is just fine with me. Since I am the only user it's ideal.

4) If you've enabled root, then is the old password the same one that you used for root?
See answer to question #3.

Moochas Grassy Ass for your guidance Millenium. YOU ROCK !!! I'm telling you brother, it's a mystery to me too. I have repaired disk permissions on a regular basis and still it does not fix the passwords dilemma. I would like to avoid reinstalling the system software if at all possible. I appreciate any and all knowledge and advice you can supply my.
